Glasgow's natural history collections are a magnificent testament to a happy combination of the strict, often obsessive, Victorian ideals of collecting, preserving and categorising, with the modern ability to interpret, analyse and entertain. The sheer depth and variety of material is staggering – it contains internationally important collections such as the Robert Scase shells, the Manley collection of moths and butterflies and the John Young collection of Carboniferous Age fossils. Individual treasures include the rare great auk, the skeleton of a prehistoric giant Irish deer and a complete Ichthyosaur fossil skeleton. It also has, of course, the dazzling and dramatic habitat displays of preserved birds, reptiles and animals, as well as the elephant, Sir Roger, beloved by many generations of Glaswegians.
